Ross Gilmour, the man behind the brand, founded Checkmate Socks in March 2019.
From the initial sketches and ideas in June 2018, Checkmate Socks have been on a journey of development. In June 2019, the brand of Checkmate was born, built from the simple foundations of a pencil and paper and a heartfelt concept.
Fast forward to 2023 and Checkmate socks has 10 different styles of high quality, fashion savvy socks with an important social message,
''Check your mates are ok. It could save a life one day!''
The brand was established with two aims; to provide high quality, specialist designed socks and to make a difference to the lives of others.
1 in 4 people will struggle with a mental health problem throughout their lifetime and suicide is one of the most common causes of death in young men in the UK.
Having witnessed the effects of mental health on family, friends and the wider community, Checkmate Socks founder wanted to build a brand that could make a difference not only to those he knows, but also to the lives of others who may be struggling with their mental health.
Checkmate socks is a brand that aims to give something back, with 10% of all sock sales donated to Mental Health Charities.
Our next goal is to reach £10,000 of donations to charity through sock sales.
The dream is to reach £1,000,000.
We would love you to join us on this journey!
TZAR! was borne in adversity but out of love, out of a hope that the inherent value found in a not-so-distant culture, could be excavated and placed in the perfect setting. Esteemed in a world that seems to have looked for answers in all the wrong places.
TZAR! is a rallying cry to children born in different nations but with a commonality of heritage to assemble and let their voices be heard, to mobilise and ‘speak truth to power.’
We started with 10 garments, their criteria: cultural truth; honour the maker, honour the wearer; aesthetically pleasing; traceable. At the time of launch, we have 15 garments coded with sustainability, ready to serve the African diaspora around the world whilst re-educating a misinformed world and inviting them in.
The dream is to reframe a generation to save generations. There’s an African proverb that says, “if you think you are too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent a night with a mosquito.”
‘We’ are that mosquito.
*TZAR! customers will experience cultural reconnection through fashion. They will become part of a community that has sustainability at its heart to the extent that they champion paying high prices for the assurance that ‘small fingers’ aren’t being exploited at any point in the process. TZAR! customers are part of a catalyst for change. This catalyst is evoking a paradigm shift causing people to decry ‘disposable’ fashion in favour of quality for longevity. This will be our legacy.
We work with local artisans in Scotland and in Ghana to sustain or enhance traditional techniques and stop skills ‘ageing out.’
We work closely with, socially conscious Factories.
Our process considers lifecycle, and we use the highest quality fabrics with the best performance. For us, style begins with sustainability.
